JANGLE AND SNARK FROM AN RV, TRAVELING AROUND THE US”

BIO

Dustpan Failures is the traveling recording project of songwriter Mark Alan Johnston, tracking songs from a small RV studio while roaming East Texas and beyond. The music blends jangling guitars, B-3 textures, and road-worn Americana storytelling with lyrics that have been descrbed as “exhausted clarity.”

The latest EP, Hymns From the Gravel, moves from roadside whimsy to small-town satire and ends in defiant gospel-stomp reflection, anchored by the standout single Tragically Suburban.

THE SETUP

Recorded in an RV while traveling, using iZotope RX to take the constant refrigerator hum out of the guitar pickups, his wife watching YouTube in the adjoining room, and the guy across the road with the diesel pickup that desperately needs a new muffler while he's doing vocals, Hymns From the Gravel is the debut ‘test balloon’ five song EP release from Dustpan Failures, a one-man operation, since apparently someone is too set in his ways to get along well with others. And it's a small RV.

Life on the road is not easy, especially when you're recording piano and B-3 parts on a mini keyboard, ‘cause that’s all you have room for, while trying to see the sights when you accidentally end up some place interesting, and search for a few bars of State Park 5G coverage so you can communicate with the outside world.
